I keep saying I'm gonna keep it together and stay on top of it, but school, work and fishing keep getting in the way of it. Anyway, let's try this one more time. I floated the lower section of a local creek here in State College with my buddy Justin today looking for some big browns. We had high water, big streamers, and a new trailer for my boat to break in so we had high hopes for the day. Justin met me at my dorm around 1:15 and we were off. After picking up the boat, we headed to the water. We only had enough time to do a short float of about 4 miles, but that was enough. We moved some really good fish, tested some new patterns and caught some nice fish so it was a successful day in my book.
As of today, I'm done with my classes until Monday the 11th, so I have some big plans for spring break. Some of my friends are going to places like Florida or California to party, but for me, this weekend marks the start of a multi-state, multi-day fly fishing marathon. The old Camry will have some serious miles put on her with the trailer in tow in the pursuit of big fish. First stop on the list will be the Fly Fishing Show in Lancaster, PA on Saturday on my way home from school. Sunday's stop will be the lower Lehigh River with my buddy Shane looking for some early season muskies. Monday will find me floating down the Schuylkill with Jake and Casey from the Reading shop again searching for the big toothy SOBs. On Tuesday, I'll be headed for the Catskills to float the Upper Delaware with Justin chucking some more big streamers around. On Wednesday I'm planning to head down to Western Virginia for the day again searching for muskies. Thursday I'll actually spend some time at home with my parents which I think they will appreciate, but Friday it's back to the Delaware with Justin and our other buddy Stephen. Saturday and Sunday will find me out in Ohio with the two hander swinging some new water in search of fresh chrome and then back to school late Sunday night to be ready for class on Monday. It's gonna be a rough week, but I can't wait! See you all on the other side. Spring and rising fish are right around the corner, so it's back to the vise for me... I have plenty of Hendricksons to get done tonight. Be well folks. I love throwing big flies for big fish. Smallmouth, Brown Trout, Muskies... it doesn't really matter as long as I get to break out a big rod and toss big gnarly streamers at them. Fly fishing film maker Robert Thompson is the creator of one of my favorite fish pornos, the HUGELY successful (and super, mega badass) film Musky Country: Zero 2 Hero. Well RT is killing it yet again with his latest film, The Brothers Brown. This new video follows the exploits of the Grajewski brothers from Michigan. While relatively new to the spot light of the fly fishing world, these three brothers know their stuff. They absolutely hammer both big browns and some of the largest muskies I have ever seen caught on a fly rod quite regularly. The middle brother Matt is becoming quite well known for his creative articulated streamer patterns and for his collaboration with Nick Granato on the newly revamped Fly Obsession blog that is loaded with sick fish porn photos and some outstanding fly tutorials. Both Nick and Matt are great tiers that are always working to push the envelope with new materials, techniques and styles of flies looking for that next big thing, so be sure to check them out. While the elder and younger Grajewski brothers aren't blog famous as far as I know, they are both incredible fisherman as well and from what I have seen and heard, a blast to hang out with. From the looks of this short trailer, RT has really stepped up his filming game and I absolutely can NOT wait to see this new movie! Check out the clip below (and RT's vimeo page if you have some time and wanna have your mind blown with some super cool footage) and be sure to be on the lookout for the actual movie in the Fly Fishing Film Tour coming to an area near you. Until then, stay thirsty my friends.
I fished Valley a few times, and while it wasn't great, I enjoyed being out in my old stomping grounds. Then on New Years Day, Jake, Casey and myself all hit the water and fished a small wild brown creek near Reading in the morning and then headed over to the Tully in the afternoon. We had a good time together and caught some nice fish. Jake should be putting up a post on that trip soon since he's got all the pictures, so be sure to check out his blog. After a relaxing break with family and friends, some hunting ( finally connected this season!), and some fishing back home, I headed back to State College this past Saturday afternoon. Bright and early Sunday morning, my good buddy Paul from school, Harry "The Big T" Tomlin, and myself headed over to Spring creek for the day. Things started off pretty slow and stayed that way. We all caught fish, but it was far from phenomenal. This winter has been pretty slow for me in State College, but I'm loving just being out and catching at least a few every trip. I can't wait until Spring rears her beautiful head and we have bugs here in State College! Until then I'll keep grinding it out and dreaming of rising fish. (Or some high water... gotta love the big fly streamer bite!) Here are a few shots from the day. Enjoy.
I picked up a new Cliff's Bugger Beast the other day and I have been tying like a mad man to fill it. As of now, I'm at a little over 60 new articulated streamers (some with multiple articulation points) and I'm still working hard to get it filled. There's something great about looking down into a jam packed streamer box full of big, gnarly flies ready to feed to some even bigger, gnarlier browns. I'm trying to get out to Western PA with the boat this weekend and float a new river that supposedly holds some really, really large browns and a whole bunch of muskies in the same stretch of water... Sounds like paradise to me! With a little luck, I might even be able to do one my favorite things ever: Strip huge streamers from a boat on big water in a snow storm. (Yeah, it has to be that specific!) Here is a little sneak peek of what I've been tying. Hopefully, I'll have some cool pictures from the float to post if I can make it work and get out there. Hope everyone had a great holiday with family and friends and remember, it's never to cold to go fishing, so get out there and catch some fish!
While we still had below average flows, we did receive some water and we decided to give it a go. We fished for most of the day, and while the fishing was FAR from great, we still each managed to land a couple fish and just enjoy being out on the water. Here are just a few pictures from the trip.
Yesterday, however, Penns Creek dropped to around 700 CFS, so myself and my two new buddies from school, Stephen and Justin, decided to take our boats out and do a little high water streamer fishing on Penns and I'm certainly glad we did. We had very consistent action all day long as we moved quite a few fish with streamers in the slower water and did very well with nymphs in almost every riffle we stopped at. Overall it was a great day and I'm looking forward to doing it again.
Well after a hectic first month of school and promising to get some new stuff up here, I finally got around to going fishing! I got out of class around 10:30 this morning and headed over to Spring Creek for the afternoon. Fall is here and the streamer bite is on. While it was not quite as good as I was hoping, the browns of Spring Creek did not disappoint. Enjoy.

Last Saturday was also the opening day of archery season here in PA. I left State College and made the trek back East to hunt with my good friend Tom at his place in Northeast Pennsylvania. The morning was pretty slow, but the evening was great. I saw a ton of deer, but nothing that I was quite comfortable shooting. I'm hoping to get back out there next week and hopefully put some meat in the freezer.

We decided that it would probably be best to not float down the river with 9 foot long lightening rods, so sadly, we never made it out. I did, however, break the bow out again for some practice up here in State College in preparation for our September 29th opener here in PA. Don't worry people... I promise I'll get some new fishing content up soon!
I apologize for the lack of content recently, but I've been super busy with school over the last two weeks. I knew college would be different from high school, but man it is REALLY different. I'm planning to float the Juniata again this Saturday with Harry so be sure to check back soon for another float trip recap. Also, Fall is almost here and I'm beginning to really focus on bow hunting a lot as well, so keep an eye out for some cool pictures and stories once I start getting up in the trees in a few weeks. Peace and love my friends. I met Harry around 9:30 this morning and after a brief discussion and looking at a few maps we headed to the river. Neither of us had ever floated the Juniata before, but we had high hopes for the day. When we got to the water it was definitely up and off color, but we said why not and got the boat in the water. We started the float at the confluence of the main stem of the Juniata and the Raystown Branch. The Raystown Branch was low and crystal clear while the J was super high and dirty. The two currents combined to create a healthy flow with a good amount of color to the water. Within the first 100 yards of the float we saw at least 10 smallmouth over 16" on the clear side of the river... a good sign for sure, but we only had one average bass eat. As we got further downstream, however, the magic green color that I love to see was formed when the two flows mixed and then it was game on. Within a few yards downstream of a large set of riffles that mixed the water I was into a good fish. Two casts later I caught an even bigger fish and the rest is rock and roll history. We had good action all day long with Harry and I each catching a bunch of fish and losing a good number as well. Overall, it was an outstanding day on some new water with a good buddy. Can't wait to do it again Harry! I leave for PSU next Saturday, so I'll be floating the J a bunch trying to learn the water as well as I can when I get to school. If the fishing is as good as it was today on a regular basis I might even end up guiding out there. Stay tuned for more!

And now for the good stuff... THE PICTURES!
For any of you that frequent TCO State College, you know exactly who I'm talking about. Harry is a crazy dude and can always make me laugh whenever I talk to him, so needless to say, I'm pretty stoked about it. We will be floating the big Juniata in search of fat bronzebacks and as always, I'll be on the lookout for the big nasty toothy critters known as muskellunge. Hopefully I will have a great story and some awesome pictures to post, so stay tuned for more. Peace and love.

Two weekends ago, my uncle and I took my pontoon boat onto a small lake in South Jersey right by his house. My uncle is a great fisherman and a great dude. Over the years he has taught me a ton about fishing and about life in general. Whenever we get together and hit the water, I know it's gonna be a good time. It was hot and we could only fish during the middle of the day, but we got it done with quite a few largemouths that were still willing to play. My uncle, affectionately known to everyone as "Bub," cleaned up with texas and carolina rigged rubber worms on a light spinning outfit and I picked up a few bass casting large streamers to structure and weed beds. We had a blast and I can't wait to do it again!

Last Sunday, I was going to float the lower Schuylkill river a little bit closer to home with a buddy I went to high school with, but when he called and couldn't make it, I called up a customer turned friend, Josh, to see if he was game. Turns out he was free, so we met in Phoenixville and then shuttled the cars and my boat up to Limerick. I had never floated this stretch of the Skuk, but we figured the bass fishing would still be decent. Well it turns out we figured wrong. The stretch we floated was shallow, slow and pretty much structureless. We saw a few nice bass, but nothing crazy and those that we saw were super spooky and didn't want to eat. We did, however, see a number of GIANT carp, so I might be back to do a little sight fishing on those big sandy flats in that stretch of water. I pretty much just rowed and coached Josh through his first time fishing streamers for bass off of a drift boat. Josh was great on the boat and fished the whole time, never complaining about the lack of action. His persistence payed off with a solid smallmouth that gave us an awesome acrobatic aerial show right before last light. Even tough the fishing was definitely far from great, I still had an awesome time and I hope Josh did too. We'll get 'em next time man. Remember, when the weather gets hot and the trout fishing gets slow, grab a bigger rod and chase smallmouth... They are a ton of fun on the fly rod and can really turn a hot summer day into an awesome day of fly fishing!
And now that that's done...

Last weekend was our 2012 TCO Team Meeting on the West Branch of the Delaware. The meeting didn't officially begin until Sunday morning, but I decided to head up on Saturday and get a jump start on the fishing. I got to the water by about 3 in the afternoon and was greeted with quite a few guys and not a whole lot of bugs. The fish were up and eating, however, so I tried my damnedest to catch one. Unfortunately that just didn't happen. That afternoon in the No Kill section of the Delaware river was probably the most challenging, technical and frustrating few hours of fishing I have ever faced and I just couldn't buy an eat. Hey that's fishing, right? Joey, however, did manage to land a super nice fish just a few hundred yards upstream from me. Nice work man. I met up with Jake and Joe at the parking lot and we all headed to Lydia's for dinner with George and Paul from TCO State College. After dinner, we all made our way back to the West Branch Angler and headed to bed.

Sunday morning was our official team meeting and after breakfast we jumped right into the swing of things. When our meeting wrapped up that afternoon, we all immediately got wadered up and headed for the water. George and I were the first two down there and we picked our way down the long pool each catching quite a few fish. Mr. Daniel caught a dandy of a brown trout about halfway down the pool and after a brief, but chaotic fight, we had a piggy in the net. Great job George!
By that point nearly every TCO employee was standing waist deep in the West Branch and casting to rising fish. I worked my way up and down stream catching a few smaller fish, but nothing to write home about. Eventually as I was walking upstream I saw a super small, super sippy rise on the opposite bank. I waded out as deep as I could and made a few casts. The fish kept eating, but was ignoring my fly, so I changed patterns and tried again. On the second drift with the new emerger, I literally just watched a little dimple on the water make my fly disappear. I set the hook and was rewarded with some weight, but again, nothing crazy. The fish felt good, but he wasn't running hard or even dogging me that badly. He was kinda just swimming around. I was fighting the fish just like any other until he got close enough and I could see him. I literally yelled "Oh my god, this fish is huge!" as I watched the largest trout of my life just glide past me. After a few more incredibly tense and nerve racking moments, I slipped the fish into the net. Jake had waded upstream and we snapped a few pictures and let the fish swim away. Talk about awesome, just simply awesome. Thanks for being cameraman buddy.

We all caught some really nice fish and just had a great time hanging out together, something that we don't all get to do that often. We headed back to the cabins and started a nice big fire and told stories, made jokes (many of which were at my expense of course) and just hung out. That is until the CRAZY thunderstorm that rolled through put out the fire and forced us under the roof on the deck. After a long day and a long night, we finally headed to bed. The next morning we saw all the new Simms product for this Fall and next Spring and there is some super cool stuff on the horizon so make sure you check it out. After we finished up with TCO business, we all headed back out to the water. This time, Jake, Joe, Henry, Kyle (all from TCO Reading) and myself decided to float. Henry, Jake and Joe on Joe's Hyde and Kyle and myself on my pontoon. We got all set up and headed down and launched the boats in high sun and clear skies. We made it literally a hundred yards downstream from the boat launch and those clear skies became black and we were pounded with a heavy thunderstorm that also dumped a good amount of hail on us. Luckily we were close enough that we ran back to the cars to wait it out. Once it cleared (relatively) we were back on the water and floating. The fishing started off slow, but it eventually picked up and turned into one of the best days of fishing I have ever had on the Delaware. We all caught plenty of fish and some big ones at that. It was an awesome day. My cell phone died about half way through the float, so I only have a few pictures of our float, but Jake, Joe and Henry got some really cool shots. So, overall the weekend was a huge success with lots of fish and some great times had by all. I can't wait for next year's meeting! Here are a bunch of pictures from the weekend so enjoy.

Now for the other awesome part of my week. Anyone that knows me, knows I have an obsession with Muskies. A musky has been number one on my species hit list for quite some time now, but I just couldn't get it done. I fished and fished, but I could not get an eat. I had follows, swipes at the flies, but no solid eats or hookups. That all changed yesterday. I woke up at 4:30 AM, packed the car and headed out to Reading. I met Jake at the shop right before 6. We hooked up the boat trailer and we were off. We were floating the lower "Musky Float" where we have seen quite a few fish and where Jake caught his musky last year. We met up with Gavin, a guide from the Reading store and just an all around cool dude at the take out and then drove up river about 2 miles and put the boat in the water. We had only been fishing for about half an hour when I had a super short follow and a fish try to grab the fly right as I lifted it from the water to cast again. I immediately began to fire casts right back in there, but the fish never moved again. It was frustrating, but incredibly exciting at the same time. We worked our way down river each taking turns fishing and rowing. As we got close to the take out, I was on the oars, Gav was in the front of the boat and Jake was at the back. All of a sudden Gav just goes, "Yo check this out." in an extremely casual manner. Jake and I look over to see a 36" plus musky following Gavin's fly about two feet away from the boat! The fish dropped off and Gav made another cast which resulted in another quick follow, but no eat. We arrived at the boat launch fishless and feeling like we got kicked in the nuts yet again. Jake had to be at work in about half an hour, but Gav and I were free for the rest of the day, so Jake offered to let us use his boat and just float again. After getting multiple follows in less than 2 miles of water (which is quite good in the musky world) we decided why not and after dropping Jake off at work, we were back out for an even longer float.

We had been fishing for quite some time with no action when it happened. I was on the oars and Gav was up front casting. He made a cast into some real fishy looking water and after two or three strips, a musky came out and completely blindsided his fly, completely engulfing a 7" long streamer with ease. As Gavin set the hook, however, the loop on the end of his fly line broke! He was left with no leader and no fish. We saw the fly slowly begin to float to the surface so we figured the fish never felt steel. I quickly stood up and offered my rod to Gavin, but he told me to cast. (Stand up guy) I made a cast near where the fish ate, but nothing happened. I then dropped the fly in the same spot that Gav did and I shit you not, I made two strips and was greeted with the most violent and powerful eat I have ever felt in freshwater fishing. I set the hook and immediately had a musky jump 4 or 5 feet out of the water only a few feet in front of Gav's face. The fish was shaking it's head so violently the water looked like it was boiling all around us. The fish fought hard and went deep under the boat, but after some serious pulling, the fish was boatside and Gavin was clipping his Boga grip onto the musky's jaw. I was shaking and screaming and laughing and just going insane. I couldn't believe I just caught a musky. It had been such a long time coming that it almost didn't seem real. I was full of so many different emotions, but mainly I was just STOKED. I finally did it. We rowed over to shore and Gavin took some awesome pictures. After just admiring the fish and letting it all soak in, I let him swim away and watched the coolest and most badass fish of my life disappear back into the deep water. Special thanks to Gavin and to Jake for everything you guys did to make that happen. I won't ever forget it. And now for the pictures!!!

Now my dad taught me much of what I know about fishing in general, but he is not a fly fisherman. On this trip, however, he agreed to give it a go. My only goal for the evening was to have my dad catch at least one smallmouth with a fly rod and thankfully it all worked out. About half way through the float, after some coaching on casting, stripping the fly and just getting used to having a 9 foot rod in his hands, my dad landed his first ever fish on a fly rod, a spunky little Schuylkill River smallie! Well done Pops. In other news, between Jake and myself we saw 4 muskies and had two follows in the short float we did on Sunday afternoon. Talk about exciting! Seeing a big gnarly tooth filled face eyeing up your streamer boat side is a huge adrenaline rush, and the fish didn't even eat the fly! I'll be back after those fish for sure.

Monday morning found me on the road to meet up with Jake to float the Lehigh. We decided to do a longer float than Shane and I did on Saturday, and it paid off with some solid fishing. We arrived at Bowmanstown around 10:30 and put the boats in the water for a full day of fishing. We each floated alone in our own boats so we could pick up some friends later on during the day. The fishing was disappointingly slow again in the earlier part of the float just like it had been on Saturday with Shane, but we still had high hopes for the later part of the day.
Around 5 o'clock Jake and I rowed into Walnutport where we met up with my buddies Shane and Tom. Shane hoped into Jake's boat and Tom jumped into mine and we headed for Tom's house right on the river about 3 miles below us. The fishing was pretty good right off the bat with a bunch of smaller fish coming to hand right away, but the fishing was still far from great.
Just upriver from Tom's house, it was like someone flipped a switch. Within minutes, it went from a fish every few hundred yards between the two boats to a fish every few casts for every angler. We had a blast and finally rowed into the takeout at Tom's in darkness. Overall, it was an awesome three days of fishing with some of my closest friends and family. Sometimes the fishing was good and sometimes it wasn't so good, but it was always fun. My arms and shoulders sure are feeling it after three days of rowing the new boat. I took a break today, so I might give it a go tomorrow. We shall see. Enjoy the pictures and get out there and fish! Smallmouth fishing is an absolute blast and it is a great way to get out even in the heat of Summer!

Well today was the inaugural float of my new two man pontoon boat and it was a scorcher. Temperatures were around 100 degrees for most of the day, but my buddy Shane and I decided the best way to cool off would be with some hot smallmouth action. (See what I did there.) Hot smallmouth action is not what we found, however, as the fishing was pretty terrible for most of the day. I spent the majority of our trip behind the oars, but we stopped to fish a few times and I did make a few casts in some likely looking water with nothing to show for it. Even though the Lehigh River bass were not cooperating, we had an absolute blast on the water today. The one and only smallmouth landed today was Shane's first ever smallmouth caught on a fly rod. A fat 17" fish is not a bad way to start a smallmouth career. Again, awesome job man! The fish fell to an olive Zuddler stripped behind a giant boulder in the middle of the river. Well technically "off" of a giant boulder as Shane's cast was a bit too far and the fly landed right on top of it. The fish absolutely CRUSHED the fly as it dropped into the water and the fight was on. Shane had a ton of fish follow and nose the fly, but very few committals. Hey, that's fishing for you. Overall, it was a great day on the water spent with a good friend and I have to say, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new boat. I'm floating the Skuk tomorrow with my dad, so we will see how that goes. Now for some pictures!

Well, maybe it's not quite a "boat," but it's still one of the coolest things I've ever bought before. For a long time I thought about getting a canoe or a kayak, but then I wanted a one man pontoon boat that I could use to float down my favorite trout and smallmouth rivers. A few days ago, however, through some magical twist of fate, I was given the opportunity to pick up a two man pontoon boat for a killer price, so I jumped on it. It's an Outcast PAC 1200 inflatable pontoon boat that will be absolutely perfect for floating the Lehigh, Schuylkill, Delaware and Juniata rivers along with quite a few other rivers and even some ponds and lakes too. I'm super excited about it and I can't wait to pick it up when I get home from the beach on Saturday morning. I'm planning on heading straight to the water on Saturday afternoon for her maiden voyage (well at least with me behind the oars!) so stay tuned for some cool smallmouth (or maybe if I'm super, crazy, and unbelievably lucky even a musky) picture or two and a full report of how the first trip goes. Thanks again Steve!

If you've read my blog at all before, you probably know that I'll be going to Penn State University this Fall, and because of that, I had to make the drive to Happy Valley this past Wednesday for my FTCAP and class scheduling day. When I was out there, I clearly had to fish and fish I did. I arrived in State College on Wednesday afternoon and after stopping in TCO State College to see my dear old pals Paul and George, I headed over to Spring Creek for the afternoon. I fished for a couple of hours and managed to catch quite a few nice fish. There were a few small caddis buzzing around, so I fished a dry dropper with a CDC and Elk up top and a Sugar Daddy and Frenchie below. This was a dynamite setup and I had fish eating both the nymphs and the dry for the three or so hours I was over there.

After I finished with my class scheduling and what not at PSU on Thursday, I again headed over to Spring Creek to fish for a few hours. Yet again, I caught a lot of fish and just enjoyed the cool water flowing around me in the 90+ degree heat.

On Friday morning, I woke up and headed to Big Fishing Creek for a little change of pace. It was again dry dropper time, but this time, I fished a big Yellow Stimulator and a Green Weenie and Sugar Daddy or Frenchie below it. This was another killer setup with some nice fish coming to hand. While the Green Weenie receives much hate as a trash fly, (admittedly from me sometimes) it was just what the fish wanted on Friday. In the words of the great George Daniel, "Respect the Weenie." After a few hours on Big Fishing, I hit Spring on my way back to PSU before heading home. I was only on the water for about an hour at Spring, but that was all it took and I caught a few nice fish and lost a super solid fish that ate a Sugar Daddy below a caddis. Overall it was a great trip and I really look forward to spending a whole lot more time on the waters around State College over the next four years! Back here in Southeastern PA, however, most of the water around here is much too warm to trout fish, so I'm back at the bass game. Tomorrow Jared and myself are headed to Reading to float the Schuylkill on the bright blue blob that is Jake's beloved boat, so stay tuned for a story, some pictures and maybe even some video.

Well yesterday, I let out quite a "BOOYAH" myself when I landed a super solid smallmouth from a small creek I was fishing yesterday afternoon. While I have caught much bigger bass in lakes and larger rivers on... (gasp!) conventional and spinning gear... this fish is definitely my largest from a tiny little creek only 15 feet across. And the best part about it all? I was fishing to a little bass that was chasing creek chubs and when I made a cast to that fish, I was greeted with the sight of a flash of bronze muscle ripping out of a rock pile and engulfing my fly. He was big, he was strong and he was pissed off... aka why I love smallmouth fishing. Now is the time to fish for these bad boys, so GO FISHING!
Ok, maybe that's not exactly how it goes, but that is how I like to think of it. This afternoon, I snuck out for a few hours to a local put-and-take stocked creek that I was told is loaded with smallmouth. The rumors were true, and I had an absolute blast catching smallmouth after smallmouth all evening long. While most of the fish weren't giants, I saw a few really good fish and had a big momma follow my popper for a good 10 feet before she saw me and was outta there. I caught fish on foam poppers, a Dahlberg Diver, and on pink, black and olive Zuddlers, all down sized for this little creek. If you've never tried Smallmouth fishing with a fly rod, DO IT! It is an absolute blast and while I love trout fishing, it's hard to beat the fight of an angry smallmouth. So, grab a few small poppers, some little streamers, a fast action 4 or 5 wt. and get after it!
I've been all over the place, from the Catskills, to the beach and a whole bunch of places in between. It's been quite a while since I've put a new post up, so I figured I'd try to get back into the swing of things. So on that note...

The Catskills:
This year, I had made it a goal to spend as much time on the Delaware River System as possible, and I did. For a three week period, I was driving up twice a week for a day or two at a time, and even though it was tiring, expensive, and frustrating, I had an absolute blast. Unfortunately, the last time I was up there about two weeks ago, I was dumb and took a solid wader shot trying to cross some heavy riffles. Of course, me being the idiot I am, I had my phone in my pocket. Needless to say, my phone was ruined and I lost a ton of pictures from all my trips since the end of May. (ALWAYS backup. Idiot.) Anyway, I got a new phone and a sick waterproof case, so we will not be having this issue again. When I was up there, I caught some good fish, fished with some good people and explored a lot of new water, so it was all most definitely worth it for me.

The "In-Between":
I fished in the Poconos and Lehigh valley a few times in that period as well, and that was also a ton of fun. Many of the creeks were starting to get low and hatches were winding down, but I managed to catch fish on every trip, so I can't really complain. I fished with a few good friends and two of my former high school teachers on some of those trips and a great time was had by all. I also went hiking with a few of my buddies in the Poconos and got some really cool pictures, but the West Branch spill killed them as well. (Idiot yet again.)

The Beach:
I've been living at my beach house for the last two or so weeks, and again, I've been having lots of fun. I only fished twice while down there, but I managed to get into some solid action in the inlets and sod bank marshes later at night. One evening while driving to meet some friends, I saw a group of birds working a small blitz in the back bay along the road. I immediately pulled over, grabbed a rod and caught a bunch of little bluefish that were busting on silversides in a little cover area. Talk about a blast on a 5 weight.

So there you have it... A quick recap of the past month for me. Hope my little story didn't bore you guys, but I'm home again, so look for some new posts coming up. I will be out doing some bass fishing, maybe a little striper fishing at the beach and a whole lot of scouting for archery season, so keep an eye out for some cool pictures and stories in the next few weeks.Len Gliwahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07883992243083334370noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8238718543800137873.post-20714687838986406812012-05-25T01:45:00.003-04:002012-05-25T01:45:50.609-04:00Catskills Recap

Jared, Steve and I headed up to the Catskills this past weekend looking for bugs and rising fish. Jared and I left Sunday around noon and headed North. When we made it to the West Branch of the Delaware, we were greeted with high sun, extremely warm temperatures, few bugs and even fewer rising fish. Around 6 o'clock, however, the fishing began to pick up. Over the next few hours, I picked up a few fish, but nothing fantastic. Right at dark, a huge caddis hatch began and the fish turned on. There were a ton of rising fish and we took advantage of it, each landing two fish during the short burst of action, with Jared's last fish of the night being a good one. We walked back to the car in total darkness and headed back to the motel where we met up with Steve. We BS'ed for a while and then hopped in the car and grabbed dinner at Lydia's. It was a good way to end a good day.

The next morning, we had SUPER high expectations. The forecast called for clouds, little wind, a few scattered showers and high humidity... aka perfect bug conditions. We got to the water around 9:30, and within minutes I hooked and landed my first of the day, a pretty brown trout. Jared hooked and lost two right after that, but then the rain rolled in. The light scattered showers we were hoping for became an all out downpour for a while. The rain slowed down, but then started right back up again. The fishing really slowed down after the rain and we kinda sat around waiting for something to happen. Steve then joined us on the bank and we hoped that the bugs would really pick up. That didn't happen. We had scattered caddis, sulphurs and march browns, but not the huge hatches we were expecting. Sometimes it just works out that way. Jason Taylor, a friend and customer, met up with us and the whole group continued with the waiting game. Throughout the rest of the day, we all caught random fish here and there, but it was definitely not what we wanted.

The vast majority of the fish we caught were in the 12"-17" range, but there were definitely some bigger fish up. I saw what looked to be a good fish rise and slowly moved up into position. He ate again, and I gave him a March Brown emerger. On the first drift, he engulfed it and it was on. The fish flew down stream, jumping all the way down. I got him back up towards me, but when I went to net him, he wanted no part of it. He took off again and continued with his acrobatic showcase, nearly taking me to my backing for a second time. I turned him and got some line back, but he decided to jump one more time. In my case, it was one time too many. As he jumped, he twisted in the air and landed right on my 6X. The fly pulled out and it was game over. Talk about a heartbreaker. That was definitely the largest trout I have ever hooked in my life, and even though I didn't land him, the whole thing just left me wanting more. That was not the only big fish of the trip though. About 30 minutes later, Jared caught a super solid fish way upstream from the rest of the group, so no picture, but from what I heard, it was a hogger. Jason Taylor also caught a great fish down below the group, so yet again no big fish pictures. Overall, it was a great trip, with lots of fish hooked, plenty lost or broken off and a bunch of them slipped into a net. The D can be a fickle river for sure, but the frustrations, hours of waiting and lost fish are what keeps me coming back time and time again. As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to brave the forecasted rain and thunder storms and head up in about 8 hours or so. We'll see what happens!

For over a year, I nearly only fished in either the French, Czech, or Polish style, or some variation on that theme. I got pretty darn good at it and I learned how to catch a lot more fish, read water better and become an overall better angler. If you haven't tried these techniques before, I would highly recommend that you give them a shot. Now you don't have to go out and buy an 11' 3 wt. rod, but learning the basics of these techniques will put more fish in your net. For more information on the subject, you won't find a better source of information than "Dynamic Nymphing: Tactics, Techniques and Flies from Around the World," an outstanding book written by my friend and world renowned angler George Daniel. The book is a wealth of knowledge on all things nymphing, from European to American styles and just about everything in between. Anyway, back to the post. So when I started using these techniques, I tied a lot of wild and crazy nymphs specifically for the European style of nymphing. While more fish than I care to think about fell to a good ole' fashioned Pheasant Tail, I also caught a ton of fish using Czech, Polish and other European style nymphs. Today, I fish with a variety of techniques, doing whatever I need to do to catch fish. The European techniques are outstanding when the conditions allow for them, but that is not always the case. Sometimes, you need to throw on the old Thingamabobber and go to town in order to have success. My time spent learning the Euro techniques showed me just how effective some of the "Euro specific" flies can be and now, I fish them all the time. So my point is, don't think that just because something is called a "Czech nymph," you can only fish it while Czech nymphing. Don't be afraid to mix things up, because the vast majority of the time, being able to adapt to changing conditions and giving the fish what they want is much more important than the size tippet you're fishing or the color of your indicator.

So, on that note, here is a quick tutorial on tying my favorite style of Czech nymph. Pardon the poor lighting in the photos... My tying lamp bulb is shot and I'm just too lazy to replace it, so the old desk lamp is all I've got.
Using some type of dubbing wax (I prefer Loon Swax), wax your thread and gently touch the dubbing to the thread. The wax will grab the fibers of the dubbing. Rapidly spin your bobbin clockwise until the dubbing begins to twist around the thread. This is called touch dubbing. Advance the dubbing noodle to about the 2/3 point on the shank.

Rib the fly in even wraps ensuring to apply enough tension to give the fly the segmented look Czech nymphs are known for. Whip finish at the eye. You Betcha! For the first time (that I can remember at least) I fished while it was snowing in April. Jake, Jared and myself woke up early on Monday with the intentions of fishing the West Branch of the Delaware. We had been hit by a ton of rain, but with the reservoir so far below capacity, we didn't think they would open it up. We were wrong. Right after I picked Jared up in Bryn Mawr, Jared (thankfully!) got a call from Steve from the Bryn Mawr shop and told us they were blowing out the West Branch, with water levels well over 1000 CFS. We hadn't even thought to check, so I immediately called Jake and told him what was going on. We checked a few other gauges and reports and after weighing our options, we decided to head to State College to fish the Little Juniata. We got on the highway and headed to Reading. Once we met up with Jake, we were on our way to State. We knew it would be raining, but as we got closer to the J, we were met with a surprise... it was snowing. As we climbed in elevation, there was even some significant accumulation. We got to the creek, got rigged up and started fishing. With cooler water temps and flows climbing steadily throughout the day, the fishing was kinda slow, but we all managed to catch quite a few fish on nymph rigs and streamers. The funniest part about it all was at the end of the day, there was a pretty solid Sulphur hatch and fish up and eating them here and there. We were all so cold and tired that we didn't even bother trying to re-rig and fish for them, but it was quite a sight to see. A Sulphur hatch in April is odd enough, but to see fish rising to Sulphurs in a wintry mix of snow and rain was pretty wild. Overall, it was a great day of fishing with two great guys. Let's do it again soon fellas.
Heavy winds were forecasted, but we decided that there were bugs and rising fish, so we were going, wind or no wind. I am no expert when it comes to the Catskills in any way, shape or form, but I decided to show Jared what I know about the great fishery that is the Delaware. Jim was already at his cabin up there, and Steve left early Monday morning to meet Jimmy. I met Jared at the shop in Bryn Mawr around 7 when he got off the train and we hit the road. After the three or so hour car ride, we got rigged up and headed to the water. When we arrived, the wind was absolutely brutal with gusts over 40mph. We decided, however, that in a few hours there would be bugs and rising fish. We were right. Over the next two hours, Hendricksons and Paraleps began hatching everywhere, but the wind made the fishing incredibly difficult. Whenever the wind died down a bit, the fishing was fast and furious, as fish were up and gorging themselves on bugs.
